Perform

We actively seek out new and emerging theatrical talents to bring authenticity and creativity to the stage.

Innovate

Now more than ever it is crucial to create accessible and engaging forms of theatre. We bring arts into everyday life.

Educate

A community of life long learners, we bring in actors who are dedicated to growing and teaching.

Idle Playthings is a brand new Manhattan-based theatre company dedicated to producing affordable and accessible theatrical productions of classical and brand new works for the people of New York as the city prepares to awaken from its pandemic era pause. Inspired by the Public Theatre’s Mobile Unit, John Houseman’s The Acting Company, and guerrilla and court theatre, our goal is to bring timely adaptations of classical works and brand new original productions for the people to the people.

What’s Happening

Our 2020-21 Season

AS YOU LIKE IT

August 8-September 5

Shakespeare's classic text speaks to the power of nature to fuel self discovery and community. Our innovative adaption of As You Like It is performed entirely outside, bringing audiences to a socially distant forest of Arden. A nine-person cast performs outdoors, utilizing COVID-19 guidelines to create a safe and innovative pop-up experience in parks and courtyards of New York City.

Reading Series

July 10-September 26

Idle Playthings is dedicated to collaborating with emerging artists and new voices. This season we have actors from all across the US tuning in to work together online. Our season premieres fifteen new one-act plays as well as re-examining classical works like The Seagull and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Titus Andronicus

Auditions August 22

Shakespeare's bloodiest tragedy comes to life in October. Violence breeds violence as a plot for revenge destroys those who seek vengeance as well as their innocent bystanders.
